NDT — Non-Destructive Testing Services

Nondestructive testing or non-destructive testing (NDT) is a broad group of analysis techniques used in the science and technology industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component, or system without causing damage (Cartz,1995). The terms nondestructive examination (NDE), nondestructive inspection (NDI), and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) are also commonly used to describe this technology (Hellier, 2012).

A flaw is a deviation from the tested element's planned shape or material (or both). In comparison, a defect is a flaw that may detract from the element's capacity, performance, or durability because of the flaw's size or location. If flaws are detected, further evaluation by an engineer may be warranted to determine if the flaw is a defect and whether remediation is required. Some clients (generally other engineers or engineering firms) require Alpha Adroit to only provide NDT without providing engineering interpretations or assessing the detected flaws (the client's engineers will take care of the engineering interpretations). In other cases, and when clients require it, Alpha Adroit may also provide an engineering assessment of the NDT test results and engineering opinions or recommendations (with prior arrangement only). Because NDT does not permanently alter the article being inspected, it is a highly valuable technique that can save money and time in materials and product evaluation, troubleshooting, routine inspections, construction quality control (QC), failure investigation, and forensic engineering.
